Keeping your Android mobile moving is simple – look after your battery!
Your battery is one of the most important components within your mobile phone and many people take these tiny little life givers for granted. Your battery is what keeps you mobile, without a good one, you become tied down to cables and plugs. To most, these are a given, your battery will always be there and it will continue to do its job, no matter what – But this simply isn’t true.
To really appreciate the work that our batteries put in, we must first understand the battery itself.
Knowing your batteries.
Samsung smartphones use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries in their devices. The first commercial lithium-ion battery was brought onto the market back in 1991, so they haven’t been around all that long.
Lithium-ion batteries work by passing ions from one side to the other, causing a build up of power that you device can use, followed by a decrease whilst you’re video calling Grandma or following a recipe in your kitchen.
That doesn’t explain much, so lets get technical!
When your battery is charging, the lithium-cobalt oxide within the positive electrode is passed through the electrolyte and into the negative graphite electrode – this is where your power is stored.
When you come to use your device, the ions simply move back across to the positive electrode, where they remain until you charge your battery once more.
While all this is going on, electrons are also flowing around the outside of the circuit in the opposite direction to the ions, causing your device to power on.
Both of these processes are connected, meaning that in the event of one stopping, it all comes to a halt. If your battery completely discharges to 0% the electrons stop flowing and your device powers down. This also works the other way, if you turn off your device the electrons stop once again and so do the ions, stopping the discharge of your battery – or so you would think. Unfortunately your device does continue to lose it’s charge, albeit at a much slower pace. This is one of the reasons why it is important never to let your device drain to 0%.

If you’ve noticed that your battery isn’t holding it’s charge like it used to, this could be because your battery is just getting old.
Lithium-ion batteries have a lifespan of around 2-3 years on average, during this time you can perform 300-500 charge cycles (fully charged to fully discharged)! But again, it is not recommended that you run a full charge cycle as this will decrease your batteries holding power each time the cycle is performed. It is always best to keep some juice in your device, never allowing the battery to run all the way down.
Lithium-ion batteries will gradually loose their holding capacity over time, meaning that your device will run for less and less time as the years go by. Unfortunately this is an inevitable issue and ultimately irreversible so finding the perfect repair partner to add the spring back into your phones step is important.
