Meet the Team – Henry

Meet Henry, he’s TMT First’s Talent and Development Trainer. Here he tells us about his career so far in technology and how it’s something he grew up with.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m 22 and left my Mum, Dad and brother in Peterborough when I was just 17/18 to pursue a career in technology. I am a workaholic but do enjoy going out with friends when I have time.

What did you do before you joined TMT?

I’ve always had an interest in technology. My Dad was always into tech so I grew up around it and loved it like my dad did. While I was at sixth form, I had my own Ebay store where I would buy, fix and sell broken mobile phones and laptops.

After studying chemistry, maths and product design A-levels I knew I wanted to work in the tech industry. When the opportunity came up after leaving school, to work at a Samsung store in Belfast I took it. I moved there in lockdown and wasn’t very old, but I really enjoyed it. I worked there for a while before spotting an advertisement for a similar role at TMT First – I went for the job, got it and moved to Newcastle-under-Lyme as a result.

Tell us about your job?

After working with Samsung, I joined TMT First three years ago as a level two technician, before being promoted to a senior technician where I repaired mobile devices, building on the experience I already had.

I really enjoyed it and was keen to share my knowledge with others who wanted a career in technology. About a year ago I was given the opportunity to do just that and took up the role as TMT’s Talent and Development Trainer.

I essentially manage the repair training programme at our new academy, supporting trainee technicians and apprentices. Part of the role means I oversee the Digital Device Repair Technician Apprenticeship, which TMT launched in 2024. I’ve built on how we do things and restructured and expanded our training timetable and it’s fantastic to see how it’s going.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I’m a people person so enjoy working with the team here. I’m also really proud of what we’ve achieved with the training.

Our academy apprentices are averaging 94% in their end point Samsung assessments and two of them actually achieved 100%, we are the only company in the UK where that has been achieved.

Seeing those results, watching new starters learn, develop and get promoted to senior engineers is really rewarding, thanks in part to the training we deliver.

What’s the hardest thing about your job?

Adapting to the ever-changing landscape of the repair industry. There are always new devices and methods to repair and inspect them.

What’s your ambition?

I want to advance my career in the training and technology industry and eventually work towards being a qualified assessor / tutor.

I enjoy helping people develop in their careers and it gives me immense satisfaction when I see the training and time invested in individuals has paid off!

Tell us something no-one knows about you?

I enjoy spending time with my dad and recently we have started working on a boat project and rebuilding an engine for this. I’m quite handy with mechanics outside the technology industry which is something most people don’t know!

And finally, what’s your motto?

Do what you enjoy, and you will thrive in it
