We do know though that it was a day set up to encourage people to think about all the old stuff they might have accumulated over the years. It might be a chance to root through the loft and reminisce over those old holiday photos or your old school reports.
Equally National Old Stuff Day’s a chance to declutter and go through those cupboard draws – to recycle or get rid of those unwanted items that are no use to you but could be of use to someone else.
Buried at the bottom of one of those draws – how many of us have got an old mobile nestled underneath all that clutter? Maybe it’s got a broken screen that you didn’t get round to getting fixed or its an old model left to gather dust because you upgraded.
Last year the international Waste Electrical and Electronic equipment (WEEE) estimated that there would be 5.3 billion mobile phones thrown away. A study a few years back by the Royal Society of Chemicals found that just over half of the people they surveyed had at least one unused electronic device (including mobile devices) – with the majority having no plans to sell or recycle them.
Why don’t people sell, recycle or get their devices fixed – it could be because people haven’t got the time or inclination, it could be because they don’t know where or how or it could even be because they’re worried about the data on their devices.
There are hundreds of reasons why unwanted mobile devices should be recycled, refurbished or resold, not least the environmental impact but that’s a blog we’re planning for another time where we can go into much more detail (watch this space).
At TMT we can help – if you do decide to declutter that bottom draw and you come across an old mobile you’d totally forgotten about – get in touch, even if it’s screen is smashed to smithereens we’re on hand. Only a few weeks ago we managed to fix a mobile that had been run over by a car and we even managed to retrieve all its data. To find out more call us on 01782 576929 or email [email protected]
This year TMT First will be integrating different activities and events to show our commitment to the United Nation’s (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There are 17 of them that were created by the United Nations to essentially make the world a better place. These goals focus on ending poverty, protecting the environment, and ensuring everyone has access to things like education and healthcare. They are also known as Global Goals (to find out more please go to: https://sdgs.un.org/goals). They have been set up to be achieved by 2030.
Our first event coincides with National Old Stuff Day – we’ve asked our staff to bring in their old and unwanted items such as clothing, accessories, homewares, electricals, collectables, books, toys, and games for us to collect. These donations will be given to our charity of the year Dougie Mac to sell in their stores. Staff have until March 7th to donate any unwanted items.
