Can you tell us a bit about yourself and why you applied for this apprenticeship?
My name is Isabella Harrison and I went to Clayton High School. I have played football for the last eight years. When I was looking for different apprenticeships to apply for, I knew I wanted to do something with technology. I found TMT First on the apprenticeship.gov.uk website and when I read what they offered I was immediately interested. They offered everything I wanted to do so I did some research about the company and then applied the same day.
What has been the most valuable part of the apprenticeship so far?
The most valuable part has been learning whilst working with the actual devices. It’s great that we are made to feel that we should never be afraid to ask because if you get it wrong it could make the problem worse or damage the device even more. I’m learning all about the devices and how to repair them step by step.
What does a typical day in your apprenticeship look like?
A typical day for me as an apprentice is working in the main repair room in what’s called the UB department, working on a wide range of devices. I have my own responsibilities and targets to hit but there is always assistance and support on hand if needed.
How would you describe the training and support you’ve received from your employer and the training provider?
The training I have received has been very in-depth. It’s covered all devices in detail, focusing on each component and examples of what can go wrong and how to repair it. It’s not always obvious what’s causing the problem. The support has been fantastic – there is always someone there to ask for help.
What new skills or knowledge have you gained during the apprenticeship?
I’ve gained an in-depth knowledge of a wide range of devices and how to repair them to the standard required so that can be sent back to the customer. I knew the basics of a device but did not know the specific processes and the correct way to disassemble and reassemble the device but now I do.
My technical skills have improved drastically. I am much more aware of how devices work, what the various components do and how they can be repaired. I am much more confident too.
How do you think this apprenticeship is preparing you for your future career?
It’s giving me all of the knowledge I will need to know to be able to be a level 2 repair technician. It’s teaching me about all of the devices, how to repair them and why a certain problem may arise and how to fix them.
What are your career goals, and how has this apprenticeship helped you move closer to achieving them?
I want to get a high grade for my apprenticeship and get a permanent job here, once I’ve completed it, as there are real opportunities at TMT First. I have seen first-hand where people have become supervisors and team leaders and I see no reason why I couldn’t progress to their level one day. That’s really what I would like to achieve.
What advice would you give to someone considering this apprenticeship?
You really need to make sure you pay attention when you’re going through the learning process and don’t be afraid to ask questions because everyone learns at different levels.
Would you recommend this apprenticeship to others?
Yes, I would recommend this apprenticeship to others as they cater for all learning abilities and there is also an option of additional support if needed. It’s also a great working environment with great people.
