Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what led you to apply for this apprenticeship?
I’ve always had an interest in devices, mainly from my dad’s hobby of fixing laptops, and I already have a level 3 qualification in computing. I was struggling to find jobs in IT that appealed to me so extended my search into apprenticeships (despite my aversion to more education) but this job description caught my attention and seemed to be exactly what I was looking for.
What has been the most valuable part of the apprenticeship so far?
The most valuable part for me has been the welcoming and relaxed working environment. It eased my nerves a lot entering the repair centre, and everyone is friendly and helpful. There’s a lot of joking around and occasional music between the work.
What does a typical day in your apprenticeship look like?
During my typical day I aim to reach my target for device repairs which involves, inspecting devices, quoting customers, disassembling and reassembling devices, ordering parts, and updating software.
How would you describe the training and support you’ve received from your employer and the training provider?
The training is really necessary to do the job, and the trainers are happy to offer any further support with settling into the job. There’s plenty of support from everyone around, one of the trainers sat with me in the repair centre while I got used to the environment, and I now feel comfortable to ask anyone on my team and my team leader for help.
What new skills or knowledge have you gained during the apprenticeship?
I have seen improvement in my observation particularly for small details when examining devices for damage. I have also grown more confident in my ability to disassemble and reassemble devices of different types.
How do you think this apprenticeship is preparing you for your future career?
I think this apprenticeship is a good introduction to a workplace for people who might be uneasy about stricter environments because of how relaxed it is, and I have definitely gained confidence for a future career.
What are your career goals, and how has this apprenticeship helped you move closer to achieving them?
This has given me experience in repair for various devices and is a valuable addition to my CV.
What advice would you give to someone considering this apprenticeship?
If you really want to do this job or something similar there are parts that you may not find that interesting, but they really are necessary, because you can’t repair Samsung devices without Samsung training. Also, everyone is willing to support you if you need it, and if you think you need even more support just ask one of the trainers or your team leader.
What are your plans after completing the apprenticeship?
I hope that after the apprenticeship I will be offered a position at the company but if not, I will continue my search for careers in device repair or technical support with the addition of this experience on my CV.
Would you recommend this apprenticeship to others?
I would recommend this apprenticeship to someone with a passion for digital devices and repair, because it gives knowledge of the components, functions and the processes that are followed during repair.
