Keeping Technology Alive for Longer: My Journey as a Sustainable Entrepreneur

By Adam Whitehouse, Founder of TMT First

When I founded TMT First back in June 2006, it wasn’t just about building a business; I was setting out on a mission. A mission to tackle the throwaway culture surrounding technology and to make a tangible difference to how we view and use mobile devices. The idea of “keeping technology alive for longer,” has been at the centre of our company since day one.

In today’s fast-paced world, where the latest phone or gadget is marketed as a “must-have,” every year, I saw an opportunity to challenge the status quo. I wanted to create a business that didn’t just repair and refurbish mobile devices but also contributed to a larger conversation about sustainability and responsibility in technology.

There are more than 80 million mobile phones in the UK alone and that figure is growing, that’s active connections (not including all those spare and unwanted devices we have squirrelled away in drawers). It shouldn’t be a case of if your mobile breaks, you instantly think about getting a new one. There needs to be the resources in place to make repairs a go to option – it’s much better for a customer’s pocket and is certainly much better for the environment.

Why Sustainability Matters in Tech

The tech industry is one of the most dynamic and innovative sectors, but it’s also a major contributor to environmental challenges. Millions of devices end up in landfills every year, despite being repairable or reusable. This isn’t just wasteful—it’s unsustainable.

In fact, in 2022, a study from the Waste and Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) estimated that globally there would be 5.3 billion mobile phones thrown away – many of which could have been repaired and repurposed. Our innovative solution means less devices are disposed of and instead are cost effectively repaired.

Every device has a story, and my goal with TMT First is to keep those stories going. By repairing and refurbishing mobile devices, we not only reduce e-waste but also give people access to affordable technology. Sustainability isn’t just about recycling; it’s about rethinking the lifecycle of products and how we can maximise their value.

Turning a Vision into Reality

The road to building a sustainable business has been anything but easy. From navigating complex supply chains to changing perceptions about refurbished devices, every step has been a learning curve. But every challenge has also been an opportunity to innovate.

One of my proudest moments this year was seeing the launch of the Digital Device Repair Technician Apprenticeship, a program we developed to train the next generation of skilled repair technicians. This initiative isn’t just about creating jobs—it’s about instilling a mindset that values repair and reuse over replacement.

We’ve also developed innovative repair processes, like our Mobile Component Repair Service, which in 2024 won a national award for sustainability. By repairing individual device components, we save money, save resources, reduce E-waste, and help people get the most out of their devices.

Leadership in Sustainability

Being a sustainable entrepreneur means leading by example. At TMT First, sustainability isn’t a buzzword—it’s embedded in everything we do. From achieving certifications like ISO 14001 for environmental management, to partnering with local councils to fund apprenticeships, every decision is made with long-term impact in mind.

I believe all businesses should have a responsibility to their communities and the planet. That’s why we’ve worked hard to not only grow as a green technology company but also to inspire change in our industry. By collaborating with policymakers, engaging with educational institutions, and attending global tech events, we’re showing that sustainability and success can go hand in hand.

Looking Ahead

As I reflect on this journey, I’m both proud of what we’ve achieved and aware of how much work still needs to be done. Sustainability is not a destination; it’s a continuous process of improvement, innovation, and accountability.

For entrepreneurs considering a similar path, my advice is simple: start with your “why.” Understand the problem you’re trying to solve and let that purpose guide every decision. Sustainability isn’t always the easiest route, but it’s definitely one of the most rewarding.

At TMT First, our mission remains clear: to keep technology alive for longer. By doing so, we’re not just reducing waste—we’re changing the narrative around what’s possible in the tech industry. Together, we can create a world where sustainability isn’t an afterthought but the foundation of every business decision.

As we celebrate Sustainable Entrepreneur Day, I hope my story inspires others to take action, innovate, and embrace the power of purpose-driven business. Because when we work together, the possibilities are endless—and the planet will thank us for it.
